Uncle Doug

Uncle DougUncle Doug ran pubs in Southern California and Chideock was his home in England. The saying 'You’ll be a stranger here but once' was first found on the menu at his pub The Olde Ship. Today his son, Simon, runs the pubs, both called the Olde Ship. If you’re ever in Southern California, pop in and ask for Simon, with tales of Chideock and The George - he might even buy you a pint!

About Us and our Suppliers

Emma and SteveWe feel very fortunate to be here at the George Inn. Emma’s uncle Doug moved to Chideock about fifteen years ago and we visited as often as we could and fell in love with the area.

We spent five years working for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage. We already knew but it confirmed that the South West has fantastic produce and here are some of the people we use, with links to their websites where possible.

We get our meat from several local suppliers and farms, amongst them our butchers  Complete Meats, Devon Rose, Snell’s of Chard, Trill Farm, Manor Court Farm and our bacon comes from our good friends at Denhay. With Lyme bay less than a mile away, we try and make sure all our seafood is from the south west and sustainable by using local merchants Samways and Davy’s Locker.

As we try to offer local seasonal fruit and veg,we have many suppliers and even when possible, get some from the allotments at the top of the car park thanks to the generosity of those who tend them, but also Cains Farm just across the road and Bridgets Market in Bridport as well as Trill Farm that we’ve mentioned before.

We make some of our own bread using Stoates & Sons flour milled at Cann Mills near Shaftsbury but also use the Punch & Judy Bakery in Bridport for most of our bread. Hangers Dairy of Bridport provides our milk and cream and Hawkridge provide our cheeses and chutneys and we use local farms for our eggs.

Palmers BreweryOf course for our ales we use Palmers Brewery - they couldn’t be more local and their heritage and expertise stretches back years.

There are many more suppliers we use and have enjoyed sampling their products. We hope all of our research has paid off and you enjoy all that we offer!
